How to inject Fyremadel® using the pre-filled syringes2

Fyremadel® is supplied in pre-filled syringes that contain one daily dose. You should only use a Fyremadel® pre-filled syringe once, after which it should be disposed of by placing into a sharps container.

  • The contents of the pre-filled syringe should be injected slowly, just under the skin (subcutaneous), preferably in the upper leg.
  • Each time you inject yourself, it is recommended that you select a different injection site to the previous site used. For detailed injection technique in all eligible body sites, you are advised to contact the prescribing physician.

STEP 1

  • Wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water.

STEP 2

  • Swab the injection site with a disinfectant (for example alcohol) to remove any surface bacteria.
  • Clean about 5cm (two inches) around the point where the needle will go in and let the disinfectant dry for at least one minute before proceeding.
  • Inspect the solution before use. Do not use if the solution contains particles or is not clear. Do not mix Fyremadel® with any other medicines.

STEP 3

  • Remove the needle cover

STEP 4

  • Pinch a large area of skin between finger and thumb

STEP 5

  • Insert the needle at the base of the pinched-up skin at an angle of 45° to the skin’s surface.

STEP 6

  • To check the needle is in the correct position, gently draw back the plunger. If any blood appears, the needle tip has penetrated a blood vessel.
  • If this happens, do not continue with the injection of Fyremadel®. Remove the syringe, cover the injection site with a swab containing disinfectant and apply pressure; bleeding should stop in a minute or two.
  • You must also dispose of the syringe and start again with a new one.

STEP 7

  • Once the needle is correctly positioned, depress the plunger slowly and steadily, so the solution is correctly injected.

STEP 8

  • Pull the syringe out quickly and apply pressure to the site with a disinfectant swab.
