NatSteroidAudit-SideImage-1

  • The incidence of Microscopic Colitis diagnosis doubled between 2009 and 20161
  • There are two major histological subtypes of Microscopic Colitis:
    • Collagenous colitis: Inflammation within the subepithelial layer, causing a collagen band to thicken5
    • Lymphocytic colitis: A build-up of intraepithelial lymphocytes5
    • There is a third subtype called Incomplete Microscopic Colitis and this is when incomplete forms may occur

THE INCIDENCE AND PREVALENCE OF MICROSCOPIC COLITIS

MICROSCOPIC COLITIS IS ALSO:

  • Most commonly diagnosed at 65 years of age (mean) and is more prevalent in women (60.7%)1
  • Described as an “invisible, disabling disease”, Microscopic Colitis can severely impact patient quality of life4

THE MAIN SYMPTOMS OF MICROSCOPIC COLITIS CAN INCLUDE:

  • Chronic watery, non-bloody, diarrhoea, which can sometimes occur during the night-time8
  • Faecal incontinence8
  • Weight loss8
  • Stomach pain or discomfort8

MICROSCOPIC COLITIS OCCURS THROUGHOUT THE COLON2

96% OF CORTIMENT IS DELIVERED THROUGHOUT THE ENTIRE COLON6

A retrospective review of 84 cases of Microscopic Colitis diagnosed at colonoscopy from 2001 to 2013 was performed by Chapman et al. (2014).

This study has shown that Microscopic Colitis is distributed throughout the entire colon:2

90.5%

90.5% of patients had features of Microscopic Colitis on both the right- and the left-sided biopsies

90.5%

8.3% of patients had features of Microscopic Colitis on the right side only, and 1.2% on the left side only
