HOW CORTIMENT® WORKS

CORTIMENT®’s multimatrix structure (MMX®) is designed to deliver budesonide topically throughout the entire colon1-4

HowCortWorks-Phase-1-2 HowCortWorks-Phase-1-2 HowCortWorks-Phase-1-2
Phase 1

CORTIMENT® is coated with a gastro-resistant film, delaying budesonide release until a pH >7. This protects budesonide during transit through the stomach and duodenum up to the lower part of the intestine.3

Phase 2

Inside the tablet, budesonide is mixed with a hydrophilic matrix. Once the tablet comes into contact with the intestinal fluids it swells.3

Phase 3

The hydrophilic matrix gradually dissolves resulting in the release of budesonide from the inert lilophilic matrices in a controlled fashion throughout the entire colon.3

COMPONENTS OF THE MMX® SYSTEM5,6

Protective gastro-resistant coat

Protects active ingredient from degradation in upper GI tract and delays its release until the tablet reaches the colon.

Hydrophilic matrix

Interacts with GI fluids to form an outer viscous gel mass, which slows diffusion of active ingredient from core.

Inert lipophilic matrix

Slows penetration of GI fluids into tablet core.

MMX® TECHNOLOGY1,5

Enables targeted delivery of
CORTIMENT® to the full length
of the colon.

A single-dose pharmacokinetic study
demonstrated that CORTIMENT®‘s colonic
release system is suitable for targeting
the whole colon.

Helps delay and extend the release
of drug.

Budesonide MMX® was detected by
scintigraphic imaging in the ascending
colon between 4 and >24 hours after
dosing.

Active substances are protected from
the acidic pH and enzymes of the upper
digestive tract.

CORTIMENT® RELEASE 7 HOURS AFTER DRUG ADMINISTRATION5

Adapted from Brunner M, et al. Br J Clin Pharmacol. 2006;61:31-8.

CORTIMENT® IS RELEASED THROUGHOUT THE COLON WITHIN 24 HOURS1,7

~96% of CORTIMENT® absorption takes place in the ascending and descending colon1

Ensure your patients are prescribed the only licensed oral budesonide for mild to moderate UC flares where 5-ASA is insufficient

CORTIMENT® MODE OF ACTION

  • CORTIMENT® contains the well known corticosteroid budesonide, which reduces inflammation within the colon that arises during a flare8
  • CORTIMENT® is encased within a gastro-resistant coating that protects the active ingredient from the acidic pH of the upper GI tract8
  • The MMX® technology then releases budesonide at a controlled rate enabling targeted delivery of budesonide throughout the entire length of the colon, whilst minimising systemic absorption1-4,8
