The Scientific Faculty and Ferring Pharmaceuticals are delighted to invite you to the IBD Doctors National Meeting 2021. The meeting will take place from the evening of 23rd September at the Forest of Arden Marriott Hotel & Country Club, Maxstoke Lane, Meriden, Birmingham, CV7 7HR.
The meeting will bring the latest advances in clinical knowledge to well recognised clinical challenges in IBD. This includes the management of pregnant patients with IBD, management of patients with complex penetrating Crohn’s disease, and drug selection in ulcerative colitis; in an era of ever increasing choice. Speakers will explore how the latest data and guidelines can inform management decisions, all with lively and engaging audience discussion, and a few curve balls along the way…

Gareth trained at Cambridge, Bart’s & the London and studied for a PhD at King’s College London, examining the role of the gut bacteria in the development of irritable bowel syndrome. He now works as a Consultant Gastroenterologist at the Royal London Hospital where he is a core member of the IBD team. His interests include Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS), Crohn’s disease, Ulcerative Colitis, probiotics and low FODMAP diets in IBS as well as indigestion and heartburn. Gareth sits on the British Society of Gastroenterology IBD committee, has a number of publications in the field of IBS and IBD and reviews papers for Alimentary Pharmacology & Therapeutics (APT), Neurogastromotility and the Annals of Gastroenterology. He is actively involved as a chief investigator in commercial clinical trials and has developed the UK’s first mobile phone App for patients with IBD ‐ ‘My IBD Care’.
Chris Lamb is an academic gastroenterologist working as an Honorary Consultant in Gastroenterology at the Newcastle upon Tyne Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust and a Clinical Intermediate Fellow at Newcastle University. A former NIHR Clinical Lecturer and previous Wellcome Trust Clinical Fellow in Translational Medicine and Therapeutics he has a clinical and research specialist interest in inflammatory bowel disease.
Chris leads a mucosal immunology research programme that studies biological signatures of inflammation aiming to inform existing treatment stratification, the development of novel, or repurposing of existing therapies, and innovative clinical trial design to benefit patients through contributing to precision medicine strategies. In addition he has an interest in evidence synthesis and for the last 3 years along with a multidisciplinary group of UK IBD clinicians and patients he has led the development of the British Society of Gastroenterology (BSG) guidelines on management of IBD in adults. Chris is a previous recipient of the award Young Gastroenterologist of the Year: Emerging Leader from the BSG, and was previously awarded the BSG President’s medal by Sir Ian Gilmore. He is a current member of the IBD Section of the BSG and has previously Chaired the Trainees Section Committee, and been a member of the Training Committee, Education Committee and Council of the BSG.
Tim Raine is a consultant gastroenterologist and clinical lead for IBD at Addenbrooke’s Hospital, Cambridge, UK. Tim is a member of the ECCO (European Crohn’s and Colitis Organisation) guidelines committee, and an author and group leader on several current ECCO guidelines. He serves on the British Society of Gastroenterology (BSG) IBD Clinical Research Group and was awarded BSG Young Gastroenterologist of the Year 2016. Tim has an interest in clinical trials and is lead investigator of several studies including the major UK IASO trial in acute-severe colitis. His research, funded by the Wellcome Trust, CCFA, OpenTargets and the National Institute for Health Research, focuses on regulation of the gastrointestinal immune system. Tim is an honorary faculty member of the Wellcome Trust Sanger Centre, UK.

Dr Burr is a Clinical Research Fellow at the University of Leeds, and final year Specialist Registrar. He has been a clinical academic trainee in Yorkshire since moving from East Anglia in 2014. HIs main clinical and academic interests are Inflammatory Bowel Diseases and Colorectal Cancer.
Dr Burr has tried to answer clinically relevant questions with the use of population-level data, and evidence synthesis using meta-analysis. With the academic team in Leeds, we have developed a protocol for network meta-analysis. This gives a ranking or hierarchy of treatments which may not have been compared “head-to-head” in a clinical trial. We have published several articles in Gut, Gastroenterology and the Lancet Gastroenterology and Hepatology recently.
Shahida Din is a Consultant Gastroenterologist at the Western General Hospital in Edinburgh and a National Research Scotland Clinician leading clinical trials and a programme of work to improve the detection of colonic epithelial dysplasia/colorectal cancer in patients with inflammatory bowel diseases. Shahida is leading a Scottish Government led working group to standardise IBD Surveillance procedures.
In 2019, Shahida was jointly awarded a Helmsley Charitable Trust Grant to develop the Crohn’s Disease Gut Cell Atlas with her collaborators in Edinburgh and Cambridge. Shahida is a member of the BSG IBD Committee and Gastroenterology specialty advisor to the RCPE and lead author of the adaptations of the BSG ASUC guidelines and clinical service recovery during the pandemic.
Aileen Fraser, an IBD Advanced Clinical Practitioner, leads the IBD nursing service University Hospitals Bristol, where she has been in post since 2001. She has an MSc in advanced practice in healthcare, completing this with a dissertation on sexual dysfunction in pouch patients In addition to her clinical practice, Aileen has also made contributions to IBD research and was a member of the BSG IBD committee involved in writing the 2019 BSG IBD Clinical Guidelines. She was also one of the authors of the 2007 IBD nurse role descriptives document.
Since taking up post as the IBD CNS for the trust Aileen has been active within the IBD nurse community, chairing the Severnside regional IBD nurse group and having been secretary and now current for the RCN national IBD nurse group . She was also previously an RCN IBD Forum representatives on the BSG IBD Section Committee.
Her other interests include managing patient expectations, transition of young patients, pregnancy, iron deficiency and the effect of insomnia on fatigue levels in the IBD community.
Dr Nick Kennedy (MBBS FRACP MA Hons) is a Consultant Gastroenterologist at the Royal Devon and Exeter Hospital, and Honorary Clinical Senior Lecturer at the University of Exeter. He obtained his Ph.D. in Medicine at The University of Edinburgh.
His clinical and research interests are in inflammatory bowel disease (IBD; Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis), particularly in understanding treatment response in IBD. He has coordinated large multi-site research projects to assess the contributions of genetics, epigenetics, and the gut microbiota to the development, progression, and treatment response in IBD.
He is a member of the UK and international IBD genetics consortia, sits on the British Society of Gastroenterology (BSG) IBD clinical research and guidelines groups, and is an associate editor of Alimentary Pharmacology & Therapeutics. He is a key author of the BSG guidance and risk assessment for IBD patients during the COVID-19 pandemic and has conducted several studies to help understand the impact of IBD and its treatments on COVID-19.

Bel sits on the United European Gastroenterology Education committee and has a number of publications and book chapters in the field of IBD and she reviews papers for several journals. She is a Honorary Senior Clinical Lecturer at Queen Mary University of London and is a chief investigator for IBD translational research and investigator led clinical trials.
Charlie is Professor of Gastroenterology at the University of Edinburgh, a UK Research and Innovation Future Leaders Fellow (UKRIFLF) and Consultant Gastroenterologist in the Edinburgh IBD Unit.
In 2019 Charlie was awarded the UKRIFLF, a personal fellowship worth £1.7m that enabled his transition to full-time academic gastroenterology. His core mission is to improve outcomes for people living with IBD and together with his team, is working on predicting outcomes in IBD through the PREdiCCt study where he is the Chief Investigator. In addition to predicting outcomes, Charlie is integrating health apps and working with industry partners to disrupt IBD care through digital technologies and data driven innovation.
Charlie is a passionate educator lecturing widely about the current and future management of IBD, the causes and consequences of IBD, telemedicine and digital health.
Lisa is an IBD Nurse Consultant working at St Marks Hospital. She has over 15 years’ experience working as an inflammatory bowel disease nurse specialist and has been responsible for the creation of and subsequent development of IBD nursing services at a number of London hospitals prior to taking up her current post.
Lisa completed her nurse training at the North London College of Health Studies, London, UK, and has subsequently completed an MSc in Advanced Nursing Practice, undertaking an audit of satisfaction levels with service delivery amongst older people living with IBD.
Her publications include journal articles and chapters on topics including IBD treatment and the contribution of specialist nurses to the management and support of patients with inflammatory bowel disease, and she is actively involved with the education of both pre and post registration nurses regarding management of IBD. She has served as a committee member on the Royal College of Nursing IBD Special Interest group, British Society of Gastroenterology IBD Section and NECCO, including 5 years as the Chair of NECCO from 2008 ‐ 2013.
In March 2019 she started working with Crohn’s and Colitis UK for two days a week as Project Manager, IBD nursing, and is currently one of the Royal College of Nursing representatives in IBDUK, an organisation committed to standardising care for people with IBD throughout the UK.
